With braces, just as with suits, ties, shirts and every other accessory, there are certain basics that could get you through your life perfectly, without ever changing anything. If you have three pairs of boxcloth braces in navy, burgundy and grey, I guarantee you that you will not be able to think of an outfit where one of the three doesn’t fit.
But, as with almost every other garment, the real fun begins when you look beyond these basics. One easy step to more interesting braces is green boxcloth: nicely compliments brown and orange ties, pink pocket squares, etc. A little more fancy is a classic repp stripe in a barathea weave: goes especially well with more sporty suits and odd jackets + pants.
Even one step beyond that, there are seasonal braces. You wear tweed jackets in winter and linen ones in summer, so why not have braces from the same materials? Renowned fabric merchants Dugdale Bros supplied the fabric for these lovely red linen braces, for example. Perfect with a nice fresco suit, shantung tie and linen pocket square. Of course you could wear the same pair of braces day in, day out, all year round: but how much fun would that be?
